Portage District General Hospital is a 275,000 sq ft newly built hospital in Portage la Prairie, Manitoba, designed by ft3 Architecture | Landscape | Interior Design in collaboration with Architecture49. Initiated in 2021, the project replaces the existing hospital facility and reimagines healthcare design through a holistic healing lens.
The design reflects the healing journey and emphasizes the importance of connection to landscape and nature, both physically, emotionally, and culturally. Inspired by the surrounding Portage la Prairie landscape and natural movement, the hospital integrates these qualities into its architectural form while prioritizing efficiency, clarity, and the movement of users throughout the facility.
The project was developed through extensive feasibility studies, close collaboration with hospital management and staff, and thoughtful exploration of materiality. These elements work together to support intuitive circulation, enhance user experience, and create a meaningful relationship between the building, its occupants, and the surrounding environment.
